Archbishop Justin Welby, who visits several Church of England southern dioceses each year, said he was visiting Derby “to encourage, to challenge – and to learn, that’s the biggest thing.” He is being accompanied throughout by the Bishop of Derby, Alastair Redfern.

On arriving yesterday, the Archbishop was welcomed at a reception attended by council leaders, MPs and mayors from across Derbyshire. He then went on a walkabout around Derby city centre, meeting with local shopkeepers and people. Later the Archbishop viewed an exhibition of work by local college apprentices at the Roundhouse venue and presented graduation certificates, before preaching there at a special service.

This morning the Archbishop met with refugees, asylum seekers and British Red Cross volunteers at a refugee clinic run by St Peter’s in the City in partnership with the Red Cross. He heard from the volunteers and Derby faith leaders on the response to the refugee crisis.

During the visit the Archbishop will also lead worship at several services and perform full immersion baptisms.

Tomorrow he will speak at an event with local business leaders on tackling modern slavery.
