Today, Justin Welby laid down his bishop’s crozier on the altar in the chapel at Lambeth Palace, a symbolic act that marks the conclusion of his tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury.
At midnight tonight, Archbishop Justin will legally cease to be Archbishop of Canterbury.
Archbishop Justin spent his final day in office at Lambeth Palace. He began the day with Morning Prayer, followed by a midday Eucharist and later Evensong. In the evening he attended Compline, a service of contemplative prayer that brings the day to a peaceful end.
Throughout the day, Archbishop Welby took time to meet with current staff, some friends, and former colleagues. These gatherings offered an opportunity for him to express gratitude for their dedication, support, and partnership during his years of ministry. He expressed his appreciation for their contributions to the Church and its mission.
