Westminster Abbey protest - clarification

It was reported yesterday that a group of protesters in the grounds of Westminster Abbey had written to the Archbishop of Canterbury asking not to be removed.

Lambeth Palace would like to clarify that Westminster Abbey is a ‘Royal Peculiar’ and therefore does not fall under the Archbishop’s jurisdiction.

As the Westminster Abbey website explains:

"Westminster Abbey or - to use its formal name - the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster, is a ‘Royal Peculiar’. This means it is a free chapel of the Sovereign, exempt from any ecclesiastical jurisdiction other than that of the Sovereign."
