Archbishop Justin sends greetings for Peace Day
Saturday 21st September 2013Marking the International Day of Peace, the Archbishop of Canterbury has sent greetings to Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley.
Read his letter below:
Having made reconciliation one of the priorities of my ministry as Archbishop of Canterbury I am delighted to send my greetings and support for Peace One Day.
Over the last ten years you have given a fresh focus and energy to the United Nations International day for Peace, enabling the vision to be shared by a new generation in a world where conflict destroys the lives of many of our global citizens.
Religious leaders have a particular responsibility not only to make our common message of peace heard, but to ensure that the things that make for peace are deep rooted and nurtured in our cultures and the moral imagination of our people.
Peace cannot be made in a day. However, this day provides a moment to reflect on the cost to the human family of war and recommit to the hard work of reconciliation without which there is no lasting peace.
On this International Peace Day, 21st September, I pray for the peace of the world and that Peace One Day will continue to flourish as you challenge us all to keep hope alive in our quest for peace.
The Most Reverend and Rt Hon Justin Welby
Archbishop of Canterbury
