In his capacity as a Vice-President of Barnardo's, the Archbishop of Canterbury will visit the Homara Family Project in Walthamstow, London E17. Hamara provides community based services to disabled children, young people, (aged up to 19), and their families. The Archbishop will have the opportunity to hear at first hand about different aspects of the work of the centre as well as meeting those who benefit from the services it offers.

Lecture "The Mission of the Anglican University in our Present age"

Rikkyo Gakuin University in Tokyo– established in 1874 by the Revd Channing Moore Williams of the Episcopal Church in the USA as a very small boy's school. It has since grown into a very large educational institution and consists of an elementary school (for 6 years), a middle high school (for 3 years), a senior high school (for 3 years), and a university, with both undergraduate and graduate schools.  The Revd Channing Williams landed in Nagasaki in 1859 to start missionary work in Japan via China. He was consecrated in USA in 1866 by the Episcopal Church in the USA and became the first Primate of NSKK.  Rikkyo University is a fully fledged university and now has a high reputation in Japan.  Its web page in English is available here.

Visit to Koran Girls' High School (St Hilda's)

Koran Girls' School in Tokyo (St Hilda's School) – established in 1888 by Bishop Edward Bickersteth to enhance women's education based upon the spirit of Christianity.  Bishop Bickersteth was sent to Japan by then SPG in 1886.  He was the person who was instrumental in jointly implementing the missionary activities of CMS and SPG in Japan.  He was consecrated to bishop by the Church of England in 1886 just before he came to Japan and became the second Primate of NSKK.  Koran Girls' School is for girls at age of 12 through 18 for 6 years, before getting to university or college, and its current enrolment is about 1,000 students.

Wednesday 23rd September

Archbishop will preach at the Holy Eucharist for the 150th anniversary of Nippon Sei Ko Kai. The service will take place in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Mary.

Visit to Dejima Anglican Theological College and the first Cathedral of Kyushu Diocese.

Service at Nagasaki Holy Trinity Church offering prayers for NSKK 150th anniversary, as well as prayers of remembrance for victims of the atomic bomb from the parish of Holy Trinity.

125th Anniversary Celebrations of Momoyama Gakuin (St Andrew's) Educational Institutions in Osaka


Momoyama Gakuin in Osaka– established in 1884 by the Revd Charles Fredrick Warren as Holy Trinity Boy's School in the settlement for foreigners in Osaka.  The Revd Charles Fredrick Warren was sent to Japan as a missionary by CMS and he landed in Osaka in 1873.  Momoyama Gakuin added a university in 1959, so it will be 50th anniversary of its establishment this year.  It has a  middle high school and a senior high school as well as a university.  Its web page in English is available here.
