Lambeth Palace Garden Open Days

In the 12th century, the monks of Rochester were first to lay out what later became the garden of Lambeth House, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury. After over 700 years of continuous use, the garden today is a green oasis in the centre of London and forms part of the Archbishop's ministry being used by many different organisations, charities, visitors and staff of the Archbishop.

Of particular note are many fine trees arranged in a parkland setting which were planted after the enthronement of Archbishop Moore in 1783, including; copper beech, hornbeams, tulip trees, mulberries, a black walnut planted by Queen Mary and a White Marseilles fig tree planted by Cardinal Pole in 1555. Closer to the Palace and separated from the parkland trees and lawns by a pleached lime screen is the raised, formal rose garden which was created by the wife of Archbishop Runcie. Beehives are kept across the pond at the bottom of the garden for pollination of the fruit and vegetables garden and to provide honey and beeswax.

The garden will be open to the public on the following days in 2008:

Saturday 10 May -    National Gardens - 2pm - 5:30pm

Sunday 7 June -       Open Squares Day - 10am - 5pm

Saturday 28 June -   North Lambeth Parish Fête - 2pm - 5:30pm
